Introduction

Hi! My name is Daniela, and I am a senior in high school, taking AICE Media Studies AS Level this year. Welcome to my blog! The purpose of my blog is to inform you on the genre teen drama. I have provided a database with several characteristics and examples of teen drama, which I hope you will find helpful.

Genre Database

  1. Genre: Teen drama
  2. Genre conventions - content: story about adolescence, growing up, and the trials of youth
  3. Genre conventions - production techniques: dull lighting (portrays gritty and bleak nature), closeup of characters, low angle and high angle shots (to portray strength and weaknesses amongst characters), clear shots and angles show different groups within the cast
  4. Institutions conventions - marketing:  trailers, film posters, talk shows, promotional tours, trailer, big stars promoting the film/ TV show, critique reviews
  5. Film/ magazine sample #1: An example of a film that embodies teen drama is The Edge of Seventeen because it is about a high school junior Nadine (Hailee Steinfeld), who is already at peak awkwardness when her all-star older brother Darian (Blake Jenner) starts dating her best friend Krista (Haley Lu Richardson). All at once, Nadine feels more alone than ever, until an unexpected friendship with a thoughtful teen (Hayden Szeto) gives her a glimmer of hope that things just might not be so terrible after all (Rotten Tomatoes). This demonstrates that the plot of the film perfectly expresses the content of teen drama: trials of youth.
  6. Film/ magazine sample #2: An example of a magazine that embodies teen drama is Seventeen because it is an American teen magazine that targets 13-to-19-year-old teenage girls. In addition, it not only inspires these girls to become model citizens and workers but also informs them about the recent Hollywood drama that occurs around celebrities. The articles touch on the growing up and developing into a woman as a girl living in the 21st century. For example, Michelle Obama in an article titled “Michelle Obama Wants us to Break a Dangerous Cycle” encourages girls to utilize their right to vote to make a difference in the upcoming elections.
  7. List of other film/magazine examples:
    1. The Perks of Being a Wallflower (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1659337/)
